25. The Perseid Meteor Shower

Updated: Oct 2, 2021

The Perseid meteor shower is a meteor shower that appears to happen every year between July 17 and August 24 which means it goes for about 32 days. You also get a good view when you are away from any lights and it is normally at dawn or a late night.

The perseid meteor shower exists because this is the time that the earth is moving through the particles of a once known comet, 109P/Swift- Tuttle which was discovered in 1862 by Lewis. A. Swift and Horace Parnell Tuttle. The rocks burn up in different stages and they do not hit the ground. Interestingly, it is not the comet that is broken though, It is the parts of the comet that is too weak to hold on to the main part of the comet. Otherwise, some would be as big as a house and it won't completely burn up. This is what happened in the movie Armageddon.

The rocks that are known as meteor have an average speed of 32 miles per second. That is fast because that's about the same speed as the international space station which goes around the earth in just under two hours. That is amazing because the earth is 12,742 km wide in diameter.

The Perseid meteor shower is an interesting topic. It is my favorite blog if you ask me. Until next time, give me space!
