34. The Moon
The Moon is a peaceful rock orbiting the Earth. The moon is spectacular. You have probably seen the moon more than 100 times in your whole life. So, what else is there to learn about the moon?
The Moon is classified as a natural satellite. All those weather and internet satellites you see are classified as artificial ones. The moon is known as a natural satellite because it didn't come from humans, It came from the natural resources of the solar system.
Apollo 11, 12, 14, 15, 16 and 17 got to the moon successfully in 1969-1972, but even before then, humans had put lots of stuff on the moon. The soviets sent a rover called Luna 2 to the moon in 1959. It was the first human made object to hit another moon or planet.
The Moon is called Luna in Latin, Italian and many other languages. That's why they named the Apollo missions lander, the lunar lander, or the eagle.
How did the moon form?
There are many theory's on how the moon formed. The one I most believe is that in the formation of the solar system, a planet was heading towards Earth. It was the size of Mars. It was later named Dia. It collided into Earth and it's bits formed a ring. These bits then clumped together to form Mr moon. The Pacific Ocean may have been a crater formed by the impact of Dia into Earth. That's a serious theory.
How far is it from the Earth to the moon?
384,400 km. But, that is just this year! Every year, the moon moves 1.6 km (one mile) away from the Earth. In 58 million years, the moon will be the same distance from Earth as the sun. (A.K.A 1 AU) That is far!!!
When will humans return to the moon?
As early as 2024. Elon Musk is building a reusable rocket that will go to the moon. It will come back and hopefully get to Mars (fingers crossed the people stay alive).
Thanks for reading my blog! Make sure you check out my YouTube channel, and look at Apollo 11 or the Saturn 5 rocket! Until Next time, Give Me Space!
