4. The Earth

You are actually reading this right now on this planet! Earth’s rotation is gradually slowing down. That means that the days and the nights are getting slower. in a long time, months will be VERY short indeed! This is because the moon is getting further and further away.

Earth was once believed to be in the centre of the universe. Earth has a powerful magnetic field. the magnetic field is the thing that make a compass point north. The magnetic field goes all the way to the outer core of the earth.

There is only one natural satellite and hundreds of artificial satellites and even space stations orbiting the planet, and the natural satellite is called the moon. The artificial satellites have no names. But, the biggest space station does! It is called the International Space Station! Did you know that It is the size of two football fields???!!!!!

Earth is the only planet not named after a God, it is named after the stuff (dirt) that made life on the crust of this planet! What about the atmosphere? Well The Earth's atmosphere is made of 71% nitrogen and 21% oxygen. That is lot's of nitrogen!

The Earth is revolving around the sun

Earth was formed more than 4.5 billion years ago by a BIG explosion that formed the sun and other planets followed by the asteroid belt and the Kuiper belt. This was not the big bang, it was just the sun forming and pulling in big asteroids.
