9. Oceans

Oceans are a large part of Earth's surface. In fact, 70 percent of the Earth's surface is covered in oceans! Oceans are home to 228,450 species and as many as 2 million are a mystery!

Oceans are so large that if you wanted to fill them up with plastic bottles, you would need 2.65 quintillion bottles of plastic! That is way more than the age of the Earth. In fact, it is more than the age of the universe! So don't even think about filling the oceans up with plastic bottles.

97% of the Earth's water is in oceans! Less than 2% of those oceans are freshwater. So save the water! You use lots of freshwater everyday, so it gets converted into saltwater and goes out into the ocean a lot of the time.

The oceans cover 361,000,000 km2 of the Earth's surface. They also provide half of the Earth's atmosphere and oxygen from Ocean photosynthesis. Ocean photosynthesis is made by plants and animals. Most of it comes from floating plankton, while other animals and plants include...

  • Floating coral

  • Seaweed that can photosynthesize

  • Algae

  • Some bacteria
