22. The Winter Solstice
Updated: Oct 2, 2021
Yesterday was the winter solstice! It was the longest night of the year and the coldest 🥶 night of the year.
The Winter Solstice is also the shortest day of the year in the Southern Hemisphere. This is because the southern half of the Earth is at it furthest tilt from the sun. Because the earth is tilted, as the Earth moves to the other side of the sun, this means that we are furthest from the Sun.
The sun doesn't go very high in the sky and it sets early in the day and rises late - it gets a sleep in. In Antarctica, below the antarctic circle, it is dark all day, the sun never rises during the winter solstice.
It is a good night to snuggle into your blanket and wear long a sleeve T- shirt and matching pants. also if you have a dog it will probably snuggle in with you so both you and your dog are warm, happy and comfortable.
I am looking forward to the summer solstice on the 21st December which is the longest day of the year and the complete opposite of the winter solstice. in fact, it is the summer solstice that is happening in america right now because it's the opposite side of us. they might be doing the opposite of what we are doing. they might be throwing off their blankets and wearing short sleeve T-shirt and matching shorts.
the winter solstice might bring snow to some cities or towns like ballarat or bathurst.
that is some serious snow!!!!!!!!!!
hope you enjoyed learning about the winter solstice! until next time, give me space!!!
year
In Melbourne the coldest weather comes after the winter solstice, usually later July.
Great Information Henry. I have a friend currently working in Antarctica and he is very excited that the Winter Solstice has been and gone. He is looking forward to more Sunlight down there.
I love the winter solstice Henry. It means that the days are going to start to get longer and summer is around the corner....yay
